Algebra I

Today we discussed
It appears that the class would benefit from another day with adding & subtracting more complicated rational expressions with unlike denominators.  We went over some of the homework and it was evident that everyone needs a little more practice.

Rational expressions just added another step.  Recalling that whenever we add any types of fractions, rational expressions included, we must have a common denominator.  We'll use our knowledge of factoring and GCF to build common denominators so we can combine these rational numbers.

Pre-Algebra

Today we discussed
Today we learned what scientific notation is and how it's used.  We learned how to convert scientific notation into standard form and vice versa.  Remember, scientific notation is just a set of rules to apply to very large and very small numbers.  You must have a number that is at least 1 and less than 10 multiplied by a power of ten.  Don't let negative exponents scare you - they represent very small, decimal numbers.

Today we discussed
Today we did a full review of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing rational numbers (fractions).  We focused on the key concepts needed to perform each operation for each type of problem.  Here is a handy summary:

Sections Covered in Textbook
1)  Today was a comprehensive review of fraction operations and we did not discuss any particular sections in the book.

Happy Tuesday! Topics for January 24th

Algebra I

Today we discussed
Today's discussion was about rational expressions with like denominators.  We are moving into adding and subtracting complicated rational numbers, which are handled just like fractions.  To be able to add the expressions together, just like with fractions, we must have a common denominator.  Keep in mind that when you subtract a rational expression, you must distribute the negative to all pieces of the subtrahend.  Also, as with "regular" fractions, you should make sure your answer is in simplest form.

Pre-Algebra

Today we discussed
Our discussion of rational numbers moved on to long division of rationals.  Keep in mind that you must divide by a whole number so you might need to multiply the divisor and dividend by a power of 10 to make that happen.

Back in the Swing... January 10th

Algebra I

Today we discussed
We reviewed our discussion of simplifying rational expressions.  We will use all factoring methods to try to simplify these expressions, including finding the Greatest Common Factor (GCF) or factoring other polynomials.  It's also important to recognize that some values will cause our expressions to be undefined, so we must name any excluded values.

Please review the chart on page 286 in your textbook for factoring options.

Pre-Algebra

Today we discussed
As we move on to multiplying rational numbers, today we needed to review changing fractions to mixed numbers and mixed numbers back to improper fractions.

Sections Covered in Textbook
This class discussion supplemented our discussion about multiplying fractions.  I felt it was necessary to review some older concepts that are not currently covered in the textbook.

A good online tutorial of how to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions and vice-versa can be found here:  http://www.mathsisfun.com/improper-fractions.html
